In the realm of elderly care, ensuring comfort and safety while managing operational costs is paramount. Our recent project with a UK-based old age home organization exemplifies how smart automation can address these challenges effectively.
The Challenge
The organization faced a recurring issue:
- Residents often forgot to close doors and windows, leading to significant heat loss and, consequently, higher heating costs.
- This not only affected the organization's budget but also compromised the comfort of the residents, especially during the cold months.
The Solution
To tackle this issue, we implemented a comprehensive smart automation solution designed to optimize heating efficiency and ensure the well-being of the residents. The key features of our solution included:
Occupancy-Based Heating Control
Heating in each room is automatically turned down when the room is unoccupied. This ensures that energy is not wasted on heating empty rooms.
Real-Time Notifications for Open Doors/Windows
If any door or window is left open while the heating is on, the system immediately notifies the manager. During this time, the heating is turned off to prevent heat loss.
Temperature Monitoring and Adjustment
The system allows the management to monitor the temperature of each room and area within the old age home. They can easily adjust the settings for no occupancy temperature, daytime temperature, and nighttime temperature, ensuring optimal comfort for the residents at all times.
The Benefits
To ensure a smooth transition to Home Assistant, we assisted the client in selecting additional hardware that was compatible and would enhance their setup:
Since the implementation of our smart automation solution, the old age home has seen a substantial reduction in heating costs.
More importantly, the comfort of the residents has significantly improved. The ability to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout the facility has been a game-changer.
Our solution not only addresses the immediate problem of heat loss but also provides the organization with greater control and flexibility over their heating system.
This ensures that the elderly residents can enjoy a warm and comfortable environment without the organization incurring excessive costs.
